How to read the level of the second tank without adding an additional gauge
Preface
As we well know, water is a precious commodity and should not be wasted, it is also a scarce commodity in the motorhome and therefore we often struggle to make it last even though we try to use all possible methods to manage it as well as possible.
The need for more water is even more pronounced when it is free, so especially in this case the solution is to install an additional second tank for clear water.
Smartcamper met the needs of many campers to be able to read the water level of the second tank directly on the original control unit of the motor home, without making any modifications and without the need for additional external level indicators to be drilled and added.
To do so, it created the DSENSOR.
In the meantime, in this article we look at some tips on how to install and manage it.

Introduction
Before we begin, I would like to emphasise that the work done on this website, from the information on home automation up to this article, is all done for free, but running a site like this costs a few hundred euros a year, in addition to the time and work it takes to manage it and make it grow.
For this reason, if you find what is written on this page useful and want to help me keep this site alive, I would ask you not to download the material without contributing a small donation, which you can do simply with this button.
How to save water?
The simplest method is to add a jet breaker with flow reducer to the 70% without feeling the difference in the amount of water as a large amount of air is added to the flow, which allows for a powerful but at the same time lighter flow of water that also reduces surrounding splashing.
If desired, there are also craftiest breakers, which allow us to open the water flow only when we move its rod positioned underneath, in this way we will have an optimisation of the opening and closing of the water without the dead time we typically have by moving our hand towards the tap closing lever (which in this case we will always leave open).
A more substantial intervention can be to install mixers that have a double trigger. In practice, these taps have two positions with an intermediate mechanical click to partially open the water flow. A tap such as this saves up to 50% of water consumption thanks to the mechanical stop that provides the amount of water needed to wash hands.
If, on the other hand, we are passionate about technology, we can think of a SMART ECONOMISER which allows us to open and close the water automatically thanks to its photocell. Basically, they are “Smart” jawbreakers.
For the shower instead, we can think of using the typical push-button hand shower which allows the water to be opened only for a short time and not left continuously open.
Low autonomy? Here's the second tank!
If even after all the measures taken we find that we have a low autonomy, we are saved by the installation of a second tank.
The tank must be suitable for use and must therefore be made of a food-grade plastic.
Where to install it?
If it is possible, the best solution is always to install it indoors, possibly under a bench box.
In this way it will be protected from the ice of winter and the heat of summer.
In practice, if you mount it inside, it will be insulated and can therefore also be used in the snow.
If it is not possible to install it indoors and you also want to use it in the winter season, you will need to add a heating resistor to keep it from freezing. Typically, adhesive heater sheets are used, which are glued under the tank.
Furthermore, if we install it indoors, another advantage will be that it will not be exposed to the light that generates algae formation inside.
If the tank is positioned externally, it is advantageous to buy a black tank to keep the light out or to buy some covers.
Maintenance
Maintenance is very important, so we must remember to empty it when the motorhome is put away.
In addition, it is advisable to use specific sanitising products on a regular basis.
There are chlorine products that ensure that the tank is always clean and free of bacteria.
Every year it is also worthwhile to carry out anti-limescale treatments to remove any residue that may be deposited.
Finally, my dear friend food grade hydrogen cyanide, can come to the aid of both tank cleaning and level sensors that can be oxidised
Water level indicator
The water level indicator in the motorhome is quite important, as the water level is always under observation by a good motorhome driver who does not want to be without such an important commodity for many activities. Therefore, even for the second additional tank that is added you want to have the possibility of reading the water level.
What can we do to keep the level under control?
If the control unit of our motorhome has a provision for reading the level of a second tank, simply connect the wiring harness in the provision.
If, however, this predisposition does not exist, one is often forced to add external level indicators.
Smartcamper, however, made the device DESENSOR which allows the level of the new tank to be displayed directly on the original control unit of our motorhome, without making any additions or modifications.
The DSENSOR device simply allows you to switch the level display between the two tanks and, if you wish, allows you to automate the pump's draught thanks to its control that can give a three-way solenoid valve a 12V.
Conclusions
Adding a second fresh water tank is a need increasingly felt by campers. At the same time, the cost optimisation of on-board electronics has eliminated the superfluous, and so the water level readout for an additional second tank is often no longer available, which is why SmartCamper has come to the aid of campers with the DSENSOR.
